Dev Diary Week 9 – Home and Netherworld

This week was fairly busy with the Netherworld showcase of Crowd Control and second week of development for the Late Night Wanderer. There were a number of features that were implemented into the home game and into crowd control for the netherworld showcase that I am going to discuss here.

Late Night Wanderer

A number of changes were made to the game which included general bug fixes and code maintenance when something breaks. But a large portion of the development this week included controls, controls are important in the game because being able to limit the controls of the player would also help us craft the experience. This was done by disabling looking around using the mouse and only allowing the player to look left and right similar to the original Doom(1993) controls. This should give the player more uneasiness, especially when hearing something behind them as they cannot exactly turn around as quickly anymore.

Another development of the game was the implementation of a pathfinding system. We wanted a system that helped the player find their way around the map, but not know what the exact map looked like. I created a pathfinding system that points the player in the direction in which they need to go and implemented the battery system on the phone to ensure that they aren’t able to use it infinitely. Finally, I added in a stalker script, this script will follow the player around and grabs the player’s position every five seconds and move towards that position.

WWise

A big problem point for us this week was implementing WWise to the project, this is due to the lack of knowledge of the system. WWise is a third party audio system that helps with integrating audio into the game with access to more audio editing tools and more control over how audio is played in the game. Other members of my group have had difficulty adding in sounds and events into the game, it has progressively gotten better throughout the week as they get more and more used to it but it has been difficult this week. I can see how the system could be useful and will most likely be more useful in the later projects as I will be able to better understand how to use the system, the first time integrating a system to a project is always difficult.
